한국학중앙연구원(원장 김낙년)은 한국사에 관심 있는 전 세계 일반 독자들에게 한국 경제사의 흐름을 종합적으로 제시한 『Economic History of Korea: An Overview』를 발간했다고 밝혔다.
경제구조의 변화를 읽고 이해하는 한국사
이 책은 한반도에 사람이 살기 시작한 구석기 시대부터 고조선, 삼국시대, 고려시대, 조선시대, 그리고 개항 이후 현재에 이르기까지 각 시대의 경제구조와 그 변화에 초점을 맞춰 한국사 전체를 종합적으로 조망했다.
기존의 정치사 중심 서술에서 벗어나 인간의 하루하루 삶을 결정짓는 경제활동을 중심으로 한국사를 서술한 점이 이 책의 특징이다.
한국 경제사의 흐름을 38개 주요 주제로 설명
『Economic History of Korea: An Overview』는 고대부터 현재에 이르기까지 경제와 관련된 38개의 주요 주제를 시간 순으로 살펴 한국 경제사를 폭넓게 개관하고 있다. 이 책은 통설을 단순히 요약하는 교과서형 도서와는 차별화성이 있다.
한국 경제사 연구의 최신 성과를 기반으로, 저자의 비판적 시각과 논점을 함께 담아내어 전문성과 깊이를 동시에 갖춘 점이 돋보인다. 이를 통해 독자들이 경제사를 입체적이고 풍부하게 이해하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
한국 경제사 연구자인 저자는 한국사의 흐름을 이해하기 위해 다음과 같은 질문을 던졌다. ‘왜 농업이 시작되었을까?’ △‘작고 단순한 사회가 어떻게 대규모의 복잡한 고대국가로 변모하게 되었을까?’ △‘왜 사람은 다른 사람을 재산으로 소유하게 됐으며, 노비제도는 왜 번성했다가 쇠퇴했을까?’ △‘지주제가 발달한 이유는 무엇일까?’ △‘조선왕조는 어떻게 500년 넘게 장수할 수 있었을까?’ △‘19세기에 경제가 쇠퇴한 원인은 무엇일까?’ △‘근대화에 실패했던 나라가 어떻게 급속한 경제 성장을 이뤄낼 수 있었을까?’ 그리고 △‘어떤 나라는 번영하고 어떤 나라는 정체하거나 쇠퇴하게 된 이유는 무엇일까?’
이들 난제를 중심으로 저자는 경제학 전문 지식과 역사적 사실을 바탕으로 그 원인과 조건을 분석하고 정리해 한국사의 새로운 시각을 제시했다.
이 책은 2016년 동일 저자가 쓴 『대체로 무해한 한국사: 경제학 히치하이커를 위한 한국사 여행안내서』를 기반으로 하며 2020년대 이후 최신 연구 동향과 북한 관련 내용, 그리고 최근 한국 경제 상황까지 추가한 외국 독자를 위한 새롭게 재구성된 버전이다.
저자는 한국사가 우리나라 국민만 알아야 할 게 아니라, 경제학의 발전과 다른 국가의 빈곤 문제 해결 등을 위해서라도 글로벌한 맥락에서 공유되고 이해되어야 한다고 강조했다. 이러한 이유로, 저자는 한국사와 다른 나라의 경제구조를 비교 분석하며 세계적 관점에서 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있도록 한국 경제사 통사를 다룬 최초의 영문 도서를 집필했다.

Jae Ho Kim is Professor of Economics at Chonnam National University. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D in economics from Seoul National University. He specializes in Korean economic history and served as editor-in-chief of Kyŏngje sahak (Review of Economic History) and as president of the Korean Economic History Society. He has written numerous articles and books on Korean economic history. His recent publications include Historical Statistics of Korea (co-author), Mostly Harmless History of Korea (in Korean hereafter), “Escape from the Fiscal-Capacity Trap in Korea, 1800–2000,” and “From ‘Intrinsic Development’ to ‘Economic Growth’ Paradigm: Trends and Prospects of Modern and Contemporary Korean Economic History.”
